Letters, 1870-1913.

A significant body of Poynter's letters sent to various correspondents, including patrons, art publishers and associates, in his capacity as Director of the National Gallery, President of the Royal Academy and practising painter. Twenty-five letters are to Croal Thomson, editor of the Art Journal, concerning a number of articles written by Poynter for the journal (1894-1904). One of particular interest declines having his paintings reproduced due to their drop in value after publication (1896). Collection includes one signed photograph of Poynter (1904).
